The Circle That Changed
Eli used to love school.
Recess, jokes, basketball — all of it.
But lately, things felt… different.
His new friend group — the “cool circle” — was always stirring something up.
Whispering about people.
Making fun of kids who didn’t dress like them.
Starting arguments just to watch the reaction.
At first, Eli laughed along.
It felt good to be included.
It felt powerful.
But one day, the circle turned on him.
It started with a joke about his shoes.
Then a comment about how he “tries too hard.”
Then someone said,
“Why do you even hang out with us?”
Everyone laughed.
Eli pretended to.
But something inside him cracked.
At lunch, he sat alone, poking at his food.
He didn’t want to go back to class.
He didn’t want to go back to them.
That’s when Mateo — a quiet kid from science class — sat down across from him.
“You okay?” Mateo asked.
Eli shrugged.
“Just drama.”
Mateo nodded.
“Yeah… I used to hang with a group like that. It always felt like walking on eggshells.”
Eli looked up.
“Yeah. Exactly.”
Mateo smiled a little.
“I started hanging out with people who actually liked me. Life got a lot better.”
It wasn’t a big speech.
It wasn’t dramatic.
But it hit Eli harder than anything his “cool circle” ever said.
After school, Eli walked past the group.
They were laughing loudly, pushing each other, already talking about who they’d make fun of next.
He kept walking.
The next day, he sat with Mateo and a couple of other kids in science class.
They talked about video games.
Homework.
Random stuff.
No drama.
No pressure.
No pretending.
For the first time in a long time, Eli felt… peaceful.
He realized something important:
The people you walk with shape the person you become.
And this time, he chose wisely.
Walk with the wise and become wise.” — Proverbs 13:20
